What is Group Schema Therapy?

Group Schema Therapy is an integrative, evidence-based psychotherapy approach that combines cognitive, emotional, experiential, and interpersonal techniques within a supportive group setting. Developed from Schema Therapy (Jeffrey E. Young), it helps individuals identify and transform long-standing emotional patterns — known as schemas — that often originate in early life experiences and continue to influence relationships, self-esteem, and emotional wellbeing.

In the group process, participants not only gain insight into their own patterns, but also experience new ways of relating to others through connection, feedback, emotional learning, and corrective interpersonal experiences. The group becomes a safe and structured environment in which vulnerability, authenticity, and change can emerge.

Group Schema Therapy is particularly effective for difficulties related to personality patterns, chronic emotional struggles, relationship challenges, and recurring behavioral or emotional cycles. By integrating reflection, emotional processing, and relational experience, the approach supports lasting psychological growth and meaningful change.
